New Feature: Tab Through Food Lists

We added a new feature tonight that we hope a lot of you will really find useful: tabbed food lists. When you add a food to your diary, you'll see that the Frequently Used Foods page has now been expanded to include several new tabs.  Each tab contains a different list of foods that you can quickly add to your diary:

  • Most Used - the old frequently used foods list
  • Recent - the foods you've used most recently
  • My Foods - all of the personal foods you've created
  • My Meals - all of your remembered meals

Clicking on a tab will open up that list.  You can check the foods that you'd like to add to your diary, the click the "Add Checked Items To Meal" button to add them.  You can check foods from multiple tabs - all of them will be added, even checked foods on tabs that are not currently open.

Note: this feature is available on the new design only.

We're always looking for ways to make logging your meals faster and easier - hopefully you'll find the new tabs as useful in that regard as we do.

Hope you are all enjoying the site!

MyFitnessPal is getting a makeover

As we've hinted in previous blog posts, Al and I have been hard at work on a new design for MyFItnessPal.  The current look of the website has been in place for almost 5 years now, and was created by probably the worst designer I know - me.    It's functional enough, but I'll readily admit that it's not beautiful.  But usability has always been our top priority, so we left the current look in place for all these years even though we yearned for something more appealing.

A few months ago, though, Al and I talked it over and decided to finally bite the bullet and redesign the site.  The redesign would have a few goals in mind:

  • Update the look and feel of the site to be more modern, professional, and attractive

  • Increase the page width from ~800 pixels to ~1000 pixels.  5 years ago, a significant portion of our traffic was coming from people with 800x600 monitors, but today, 99% of our members browse the site on 1024x768 monitors or larger, and we really wanted to be able to use that extra screen real estate.

  • Make sure that the site stayed "familiar" with our current users.  We deliberately kept the same color scheme and almost exactly the same general user interface.  We actually are planning some changes to how the site works in the future, but for this first step, we wanted to keep the changes between the two designs to a minimum.  We wanted the transition between the two designs to be as easy as possible for our users.

  • Retain the things that make MyFitnessPal great - simplicity, ease of use, and a lack of "clutter".
Today, we're finally ready to pull back the cover and unveil the results of our hard work.  If you're not already on the new design, you can take it for a test run by clicking on the following link:

Clicking on that link will switch you to our new design so you can see it for yourself.  For a short period of time, you'll be able to switch back and forth between the two designs.  We want to give you all some time to try it out and get comfortable before we make the change permanent.  We also want to make sure that all the kinks are worked out of the new design, i.e. everything works, no broken links, etc.

So please, check out our new design and let us know what you think.  We've created a topic in the Feedback forum where you can share your feedback as well as let us know about any bugs or problems you encounter in the new design.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks, and hope you are all enjoying the site.

iPhone App Beta Testers Needed - Any Volunteers?

*UPDATE*  - we've got enough users for our test, so we're no longer accepting any applications to the beta. If you didn't make it in, don't panic - we hope to submit the application for approval into the iTunes store next week, so hopefully you won't have to wait long before you can use it on your iPhone.  Thanks!

Great news!  Our iPhone app is coming along very nicely, and we're finally ready to have some real users bang on it and help us work through any remaining bugs/issues. We're really excited to have some other folks use the app and give us feedback.  Hopefully, you'll like it as much as we do.

PLEASE NOTE: This initial version of our app REQUIRES online access.  So if you are an iTouch user, you will only be able to use the app when you are connected to the internet via a WiFi connection.  We are absolutely planning on releasing a version of the app that will work offline as well, and in fact, we've already begun working on it, so we hope it will be ready shortly after this initial version is released.  But for now, online access will be required to use the app.

If you are interested in participating in the beta test, please send me a mail message with your iPhone UDID and your email address.  You can find your UDID by taking the following step:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC.
  2. When iTunes opens, click on your device under the "Devices" section in the left-hand column.
  3. The "Summary" tab in iTunes should now be visible. Click the "Serial Number" label.  You'll notice "Serial Number" changes to "Identifier".
  4. Click on "Edit" in the menu at the top and select "Copy"
  5. Now compose a mail message to me, and you can paste that Identifier into the mail message.

Don't post this information as a comment to this blog post.  Please send me a mail message through MyFitnessPal instead by visiting:

Anyone out there can apply, but if you are accepted, we do require that you answer a few questions about your experience with the app, i.e. give us your opinion about the application as well as let us know of any bugs/crashes/etc. that you find.  We probably won't be able to accept everyone, so please don't be disappointed if you don't make it into the beta.  We hope to have the official app available very shortly.

Thanks, and hope you are enjoying the site!
