Guys and Weight Loss: A Primer

I'm a guy. There are lots of ways to tell without removing my clothes. Ever since I lost almost 80 pounds I can do even more "guy defining" stunts like flipping my underwear with my foot and catching it in my hand to put in the laundry, all without throwing out my back.

Living on my own, I can resort to being the guy I once was before I lived with 4 woman.

My new apartment has two rooms, one for me and one for my electronics and the boxes with the Styrofoam that they came packed in. And no one will toss them out either! I have a room-mate and he is a self proclaimed "anal" character. At least he sees himself clearly. His collapsible veggie steamer is still in the box it came in and when it a retrieved from the dishwasher (which can only be loaded in a very certain pattern), it goes back in the box.

He also is a salesman for Little Debbie's but as a health nut, he doesn't bring any home. Thank God!

My new life includes:
- Grocery shopping in 15 minutes because I buy the same stuff every time.
- Eat over the sink so I don't have to wash dishes.
- I can leave dishes in the sink if I have to use them.
- I measure everything so I don't have leftovers.
- I buy new clothes so I don't have to do laundry
- My socks never disappear
- I run up the stairs two at a time
- I can sleep in whatever I want to
- I can set the thermostat on meat locker
- There are no flavored coffee creams in the 'frig.
- I say I watch chick-flicks so I can a date. (Lethal Weapon was a chick-flick, right?)
- I run when I want to.
- There is no chocolate or feminine products in the house
- Bacon is part of most meals
- I have 3 laundry baskets: clean, dirty, and wear again
- The shower is always free
- I get the remote to myself
- I leave the toilet seat up if I want to
- I eat beans for protein, and no one cares if I toot
- There are no unexplained charges on my credit card.
- I can eat beef every night if I want to.
- If I make it, I know what's in it!
- I can drive a red sports car (and I do!)

Of course there is the down side of living as a single guy... no one vacuums or dusts.

Thanks for the votes and comments.

Finally!

I finally stepped on the scale and I also bought some new clothes. After 3 years I have finally figued it out! Just send me $25 via Western Union and I can let you in on the secret.

Really, even though I was counting calories, I was eating too much.

How is that possible? I don't freaking know. I set my goal for the weight I want to be; 1600 calories plus what I use for exercise. I know, everyone says you need this and that, don't go under 2000 calories, multiply 3 bananas times one apple minus the cake plus the pizza, have a cheat day, blah blah blah.

Most of you know that I run a lot. I ran the Chicago Marathon last week.

This is what I discovered. I eat too much! Since I only feed me and choose all my own food now, I eat a perfect diet. A breakfast sandwich, a cheese stick snack, fruit with yogurt and walnuts, a light lunch some veggies for an afternoon snack and dinner after my run.

I have knocked off nearly 17 pounds and I am within 12 pounds of my goal.

I have also taken another 2 inches off my waist and my jeans fell off in airport security again. And not one, but 2 TSA agents mentioned that i had lost weight when they looked at my picture ID on the wey to Chicago and back.

Here is what I am doing in the last few weeks. I am not eating desert at all. None. I am not eating any pasta, just veggies, fruit, nuts and some low-cal dairy. I eat a 100 calorie whole grain bagel in the morning and no other bread during the day. And a small portion of meat, fish or chicken.

 That's it.

I will also say that I have gained 5 inches in my quads since I started this journey and 4 inches in my calves. I am down from 42' waist to 33" and I can wear medium underwear without squeaking.

I guess the moral of the story is that it's the food, it's always the damn food.

Embracing Change Without Dying

How did I ever let myself get to almost 300 pounds? I ate too many calories. The change occurred slowly over a period of millions of bites of food. It's pretty much the same way I became a daily drinker, a smoker and drug user. I never set out to be an addict, it just happened.

I was always going to change tomorrow.

What got my attention? Well, it wasn't the US Post Office considering giving me my own ZIP code or the fact that I thought I could be seen from outer space; nope, none of those. It was a week in ICU without a shower or underwear or sleep.

It was hard to decide to live.

My heart failure cost me just about everything. It took a while before I was able to work, 8 months. it stressed out my family, and I was emotionality depressed. When you don't have your health, the rest of life doesn't mean a whole lot.

Then I started running.

Oh yeah, running is bad for your knees, you'll get A-Fib if you over train, you'll need knee replacements, running is a treat, you don't need to run to to lose weight, I heard it all. And most of it from doctors! I also heard, you weren't that fat, a little meat on the bones is healthy, I like your curves (not really that one), you look cute (yeah from the top of my head up.) and I didn't realize you were so sick. WTF?

It took a year to do C25K and lose 60 pounds.

I have faced a number of challenges since I first logged onto MFP and asked what an NSV was. Here is what I can tell you. Because I run and lost weight, I have survived cancer 4 times. I have dumped 7 medications for my heart except for a low dose of blood pressure medication which I have needed all my life. My resting pulse is down from 72 to 48 and I haven't had to take an antidepressant or even had a cold. That's going on 4 years.

This weekend is the Chicago Marathon and I'll be there!
