TOPIC: Sodium Levels

The American Heart Association is recommending Americans have less than 1500 mg/day sodium in their diet. Why is your allowance set at 2500 mg/day. I need to be on a low sodium diet and this high amount is not helping. This needs to be changeable.

The 'changes' were brought out in Jan 2011 but it doesn't apply to everyone...

African Americans are 8% of the U.S. population. But thank you for that information on sodium.

I was wondering if there is any merit to this or not. 2500 mg's is hard enough to stay under let alone 1500 mg. I know my shirt is soaked after my workout and there must be a lot of sodium expelled in sweat.

Most of my running friends worry more about getting enough. I'm not saying go crazy, but the recommended sodium levels are based on a sedentary lifestyle.

But there are other minerals as well. One of the problems is that, because of our sodium habit, we get WAAAY more sodium than we do potassium and that combined with magnesium deficiency means that all of our musculature has a tendency to be irritable (including the heart muscle). This is not a good or healthy condition. There is some recent evidence that the excessive sodium has a role in blocking fat burning as well. frown

Yeah--not sure why it is so high. That's probably fine for someone who works out a lot (because of the sweat---they also have the potassium set at 3,500 mg. which is good because athletes need a LOT of potassium). But it is a little high for folks who don't work out as much (and don't sweat because I exercise in the water--but I'm one of those peculiar people who don't sweat anyway). I try to hold my sodium below 1500 (which is fairly easy to do because I don't eat fast food or processed food and I'm lower carb). And I let my potassium go where it will which is usually about 1,750 mgs. or so because I eat a lot of vegetables.
