Suggestion 1
Break the recent posts page into sections with the top 5 or ten posts for each section...
i.e.
Introduce yourselves:
1
2
3
4
5
Chit Chat Fun and Games
1
2
3
4
5
etc.
Reason: too often a post that is entered under the introduce yourself is phrased in the typical newbie way that causes inflammation in others without even knowing it. I have found that when I recognize what section the post is in, I am better able to understand where the poster is coming from.
Would also allow other users to focus on their fav sections more easily.

Suggestion 2
Add a few items from each of the user's groups to this structure, instead of seeing the last response from the last post in a group that may have multiple threads.
Reason: This would allow the content to be better framed to those users who are active in a group, but want to respond off the forum 'news feed'

Suggestion 3
allow the user to customize what sections to display on their recent page
either with a +/- root structure
or with an entry in the settings section that lets you turn those sections on or off
Reason:
This would allow people who don't want to see the chit chat section to hide it
This would also allow users who participate in forums that are less moderated, to have that more dynamic and free flowing feel that the recent posts page currently has.
i.e. I could hide tech support and introduce yourselves; and expand the boxing, chit chat fun and games, and the motivation and support sections

Summary
I think that if we have a better structure on the recent posts page, and have the ability to easily customize it to suit our goals, then perhaps it would be easier for people to hang out with like minded individuals.
