I was recently using a Fitbit Zip and Endomondo to track my exercise, but I had to move away from the pavement on my street and onto a treadmill (the pavement was killing my knees). This seems to have caused some confusion with Fitbit and Endomondo. If I manually register the exercise I get double calories burned, but if I don't enter the exercise then MFP reduces the calories because it thinks I was just really active for that stretch of time.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is having Endomondo running like before, but just expect that it won't register a route (since I am stationary).

What is the best way to to use MFP, Fitbit, and Endomondo (or similar) with a treadmill?

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Do you have the Fitbit and Endomondo linked to only MyFitnessPal or is it possible that the Fitbit and Endomondo are linked together and those are also linked to MyFitnessPal? You should not see any double logged exercise regardless of how it is entered, but I would like to try and replicate the issue. Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

In regards to the treadmill aspect. The Fitbit will be able to register this movement correctly, but the Endomondo app may have a bit of trouble as it relies on a gps signal to track your distance as opposed to an accelerometer like Fitbit.

Hope this helps and I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

Hi Scott,

Sorry for the reply, I didn't see any notifications about your reply and just now noticed it....

Yes, I have Endomondo and Fitbit connected to each other and have both connected to MFP. I am seeing the issue pretty consistently, but its not an exact double entry.

Since I wrote this post I have added a heart rate monitor to the mix, so the exact issue is a bit different. Still there, just not as clear what is going on. For example, I ran on my treadmill today. While running, I have Endomondo running on my phone like I am running. Once I am done, I manually go into the exercise and edit the mileage (this last step has no impact, I just do it for tracking sake). Here is where the issue comes in. According to the Endomondo site and app I burned 463 kcals. However, on my MFP page I see a social post saying I burned 487 kcals (my guess is the extra cals are from the fitbit, walking around the house before getting on the treadmill, fixing breakfast, etc.). However, if I look at my daily ledger I see I have burned 738 calories. In my exercise ledger I see three entries in there. Two walking exercises and one Fitbit calorie adjustment.

I know the Fitbit calorie adjustment will fluctuate throughout the day, but after several weeks of watching it I don't think it is adjusting right. I could understand being a couple dozen calories different from what Fitbit and Endomondo report, but in my observations it is usually several dozen, if not several hundred, off.

If it would help I would be happy to send screen shots. It would likely make things a lot clearer.

HI,

The issue is most likely because your have Fitbit and Endomondo linked and also have them linked with MyFitnessPal. I would recommend unlinking the Fitbit and Endomondo from each other. This is most likely causing double exercises and causing errors when they all sync.

After removing the Fitbit Endomondo connection if you still see errors let me know and I would be happy to investigate further.

I unhooked FitBit and Endomondo and am still seeing weird numbers on MFP. For example, Endo reported I burned 458 calories running today, but MFP reports I have burned 676.

When you say Endomondo reports one number and MyFitnessPal another are these for exercise logged using Endomondo's GPS and then having the exercise auto-sync to MyFitnessPal?

If you could let me know the exact steps you are taking on both Endomondo and MyFitnessPal when you run into the error it will be helpful in establishing where the issue lies.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sure thing. I have MFP connected to FitBit and Endomondo. FitBit and Endomondo are no longer connected.

When I start a run, I bring up Endomondo. Naturally I am wearing my Fitbit. I start the exercise and run on my treadmill with Endomondo running, sensing the calorie burn through a Zephyr heart rate monitor. All of the calorie data comes from the phone app. When I complete my run I stop the exercise and edit the exercise on Endomondo's site to enter my distance (since there is no GPS data on a treadmill. I do this purely for tracking purposes as it has no bearing on calorie burn). While I am editing my distance I am close enough to my computer that my Fitbit syncs as well. Both Endomondo and Fitbit will then send the exercise data to MFP (I see two exercise entries in MFP).

If I had to wager a guess, its going to be one of two things: the time data in the Endo post is skewed from Fitbit or MFP (or some combination thereof) and causes the MFP calculations to differ, or Fitbit is grossly over-reporting calorie burn (I am 90% sure its Fitbit's fault, because everything looks good if I intentionally don't let my Fitbit sync for a minute).

Endo and MFP report the same number at first, and then when Fitbit gets in the picture it seems to double or quarter post.

Hi,

It sounds like this may be related to the issue with our program not correctly changing the timezone's to match the user's timezone. Currently we receive all entries in UTC +0:00 and then we adjust for the users selected region. However this is not working correctly, we hope to have a fix in place for this in the next few days. At that point will you please let me know if the problem still exists?

If it does, the best mode of contact would be via this link http://www.myfitnesspal.com/welcome/contact_us - Please include my name in the subject line so it gets escalated to me right away.

I hope it's fixed, but if not, we will continue to work on the issue.

Cheers,
Scott
