TOPIC: Warfarin and Coumadin users

At your report site, under nutrition, you point out several items for the data to be reported. Saturated fats, calories, Vitamin C & D, etc, etc, etc.. Those of us that are on blood thinners are required to control the consumption of green and leafy vegetables due to Vitamin K levels in each. It couneracts the blood thinners purpose. So we have to limit our consumption of green vegetables. Could you add a Vitamin K category to your nutrition choices? It would be one more category that would help us balance our diet.

Incedentally, I have just started My Fittness Pal on the first of August and I am seeing the results of you program already. I won't stop till I reach my goal !!l

I would strongly support this suggestion. Not wishing to appear over-dramatic but for those of us taking warfarin it is vitally important to be aware of how much Vitamin K is contained in our food.

The recommended daily intake of Vitamin K is around 100 micrograms (mcg) so like everyone else it is important that we have that in our daily diet. However, some vegetables - notably those with dark green leaves like spinach, kale, sprouts, broccoli, have a very high content of Vitamin K - for example a 100 gram portion of cooked spinach can contain over 10 times the daily requirement.

For most people this will do them no harm at all BUT for someone taking warfarin, each additional 100 mcg is roughly the equivalent of taking an extra milligram of warfarin which could dramatically increase the risk of a difficult to control, possibly dangerous, haemorrhage. Typically we will be taking between 5-10 milligrams of warfarin each day so one can imagine the potential effect of 'over-dosing' by eating too many dark green veg which for most people would considered healthy.

Warfarin is taken by hundreds of thousand, if not millions of people around the world that are stroke victims and/or are vulnerable to the formation of blood clots for various reasons such as heart and joint-replacement operations. To be fair, most of us are aware of the foods that contain the highest amounts of Vitamin K but there are many foods (mostly vegetables but also oils) that contain significant, if not large, quantities - spring onion, asparagus, salad leaves, parsley, celery, some berry fruits to name a few - that could easily be served as part of a meal in which the combined total 'dose' could interfere with our target INR (a standard blood measurement that represents how quickly blood will clot).

It is also worthwhile to note that equally large numbers of people need to also control their intake of cholesterol, or more specifically, saturated and unsaturated fats.

This is a great idea! I myself take warfarin and have for 8 yrs now, would be a great way to see how much we actually intake, I LOVE greens, but have to be careful not to over do it........I strongly support this too :D

Great that is three of us. Perhaps we ought to approach this as a sort of campaign?

I note that we can form a special interest group - I suspect that a Group is more visible to people searching for groups of interest and we might find a few more supporters of the idea.

Secondly, I have some experience with programming - in fact I have been recently looking at the idea of producing a similar programme to this for Android phones and in the process of researching for that I found a database of several thousand foods published by the US Department of Agriculture and it includes the 3 main forms of Vitamin K.

Having now found MyFitnessPal I realise that rather than re-create the wheel (a wheel that is so good, I probably wouldn't be able to match it anyway), it would be a much better idea to make the proposition directly to the owner(s) of MFP. We could do that straight away (in fact I was considering it this morning) but thought it was probably a better tactic to first try to build up a body of support via a Group.

Any thoughts? Meanwhile, I will take a closer look at what is involved in forming a group.

I just started taking it and would love to see it done as well. It all seems a little overwhelming and could use all the help I can get. Has a group been formed?
