Okay, the title is kind of silly, but I know it will catch eyes! :)
I figured I should actually introduce myself after already posting on the boards somewhat frequently, so finally getting around to it. My name is Eireann. I'm 29 (in two weeks) and working on my Bachelor of Science degree in Health Studies. After graduation I'm going to pursue a career as a Wellness Coach, with a solid background in Nutrition and herbal remedies.
Earlier this year, I quit my antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications for my own health and freedom. I knew that I could control my "mental illness" using my knowledge of diet, exercise, and herbs. I succeeded beyond my wildest expectations! Six months after cold-turkey/fast tapering, I have ZERO panic attacks, minimal anxiety (less and less every day) and depressive episodes are minor and last only a few hours at a time.
Quitting these medications was my first step towards regaining my health. When I enrolled in classes again, I started experimenting with some specific medicinal diets for gut health, candida, and mental health... which all happened to be very low carb. I also started hitting the gym and doing lots of hard cardio, because it improved my mood a lot!
A few weeks later I ended up at the university clinic complaining of muscle weakness. After running some tests, they determined that my muscles were being broken down and used for fuel. The doctor told me that I needed to start eating more and gaining weight.
A friend of mine recommended MFP to me, and I signed up right away, this was at the end of May. I had already recorded my diet for five days for my Nutrition class, and was pleased to see that MFP is a lot easier than the program I'd used for class. I love recording my food and exercise and having this keep me accountable to myself! I have learned so much from the boards and people on here, information that has been really valuable for personally tailoring my strength and fitness goals.
I'm 4'11. I started MFP when I was about 80 pounds. My first goal weight is 94 pounds, but I'm hoping to gain more weight through muscle. I've had trouble gaining thanks to genetics/fast metabolism, high activity level, and Celiac Disease.... yet I am getting there slowly but surely, and I can already feel the difference in my own strength and I can see myself bulking up a little!
Diet: I follow the Paleo diet, but tend to go on a lot of sugar binges! Still trying to cut way down on my sugar intake and would appreciate any support and encouragement there. I always feel "hung over" the morning after I sugar-binge the previous night. I do purposely eat potatoes every day as well, because even though I react badly to grains and sugar, I still need a good amount of complex carbs. I also eat way more fruit than most strict Paleo people. I love fruit!
Exercise: I go for a 30 minute brisk walk every day, mostly for my mental health rather than physical health. I found out that my body type (in the fitness world) is ectomorph, so according to what I've read so far I really need to focus on strength training with long rest periods. Right now I'm doing push-ups, sit-ups, and squats. When I'm back at university I'll have gym access again, and can't wait!
Even though I joined simply to track my food and gain weight, I stay because ultimately I want to be an EXCELLENT example of good health! How could I advise other people on health and lifestyle changes if I don't appear healthy myself? Being skinny doesn't inspire when it comes with dry and dull skin, red eyes, shadows under the eyes, limp hair, etc. I want to be strong, fit, and glowing with the spark of life!
I would love any supportive friends on this journey! Nice to meet you all! :)
