What is the difference between the almond milk you may find in the cold dairy section, and the almond milk you can find on the regular non-cold shelf? Does it matter if you're using it for protein shakes/smoothies? Is one better than the other?

Where can you buy powdered PB2? I know you can get it online, just wondering where I should look in the real world. embarassed

What's your favorite protein powder, and why? I've grown accustomed to premade ones, but willing to branch out a little here.

Three of my favorite things!

I have never checked out the almond milk on the shelves but I always go with the one in the cold section because of the low calorie content.. I always get unsweetened Almond Breeze, 40 calories a cup. I put it in smoothies, coffee, oatmeal, anything that would call for regular milk.

PB2 unfortunately isn't sold anywhere in my city so I buy it online. I actually got my last batch off ebay.. two jars for $9, free shipping.

My favorite protein powder is Body Fortress. Cheapest I have found with the most grams of protein for the least calories per scoop. (26grams of protein, 140 calories) Also it's tasty :)

I think the ones on the shelf are just packaged differently...read the labels to be sure, but I think the asceptic packaging is mostly for convenience. I like the Market Pantry whey vanilla from Target. Tastes good, not too expensive.

www.bellplantation.com is the site for PB2. It also has a product locator so you can see what merchants carry it. Unfortunately, in my location, there aren't any. I bought mine from DietDirect, but that was quite a while ago.

I've heard that Amazon has reasonable deals as well :)

theres unsweetened almond milk thats 30 cals and no sugar in 1 cup

versus the other kind thats 90 cals and SIXTEEN GRAMS OF SUGAR in 1 cup

read the labels get the unsweetened kind. -_-

no difference for refrigeration though, they just put it in the cold section sometimes coz consumers get subconsciously freaked out when "milk" isnt cold. (amond milk unopened doesnt need to be cold)

I but the Body Fortress Super Advanced whey isolate and it's only 130 calories/scoop which yields 30 g of protein. I am currently drinking the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze unsweetened. It was on a shelf not sure how or if it differs from the kind in the cooler. I got my PB2 in the health food section at a grocery store called HyVee here locally.

There is also a Almond milk that has extra protein in it, that's the one I usually look for. Unsweetened and with extra protein. I also get the unsweetened coconut milk. I usually find mine on the shelf, but I will look and see if they have it in the fridge section too.

no difference in the almond milk. I buy the shelf kind because I buy 5-10 at a time. Once opened and put in fridge it is only good for a week(I use it quickly so that's not a problem)...but anyway like I said, my reason for buying shelf kind is I can store more at one time :) I buy the almond breeze unsweetened vanilla or original.

edited to add: I only like it served cold, so there is always one in the fridge and when it gets low, I add another

I buy the Unsweetened Almond Breeze milk int he shelf stable cartons. I buy both vanilla and original for various uses. But I buy the shelf stable cartons because, like others, I like to buy more to have on hand and I also like that they are smaller containers since my husband and I never make it through a half gallon carton of one before it goes bad. So we actually end up with less waste by buying the smaller ones. I like to stock up when it's on sale for $1.50 per carton (like it is now at Nob Hill).

I eat PB2 every day. I buy it online, by the case, in the 1lb bags and just keep refilling the jars I already had. Last time I did it I bought a case each of regular and chocolate and it works out to about $2.50 a jar for how many jars I get out of it. Best way to do it if you go through it like I do.

Protein powder I can't really help you with. I only keep some plain, unflavored, powder that I buy in bulk for $6.99 a pound around for use in home made protein bars.

Thanks for the replies! I looked on bellplantation last night, the closest place to buy is 53 miles away. I guess that isn't too bad, considering... but I'll probably do amazon or something first and if we like it, we'll scout it out in person.

I have almond milk in my cabinet (60 cal/serving) so I'll use that for now- thanks for the insight.

I appreciate all the help!

Almond Milk: I always get the refrigerated unsweetened vanilla almond breeze. I never really checked, but I always assumed that the non-refrigerated ones have extra preservatives.

PB2: As far as I know, it's only available online.

Protein Powder: I love Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Vanilla Ice Cream Flavor. It's found at GNC. It has a lot of protein and I think it tastes the best.

not sure what the difference is besides the amount and packaging.. like others have said I really like blue diamond.. I either get the unsweetened vanilla(40 cal/cup) or the vanilla almond-coconut blend . I haven't tried using them in protein shakes yet, but I plan on experimenting with that and don;t see why they wouldn't work.

I know pb2 is available on amazon.. and quite a few health food grocers like whole foods.. It also happens to be available at the smoothie place I like.

my favorite protein power is dymatize elite.. tastes great and its what my fave smoothie place uses.114 cals/scoop. 3gcars. 2 fat. 24 g protein. They have it in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. it isn't the cheapest one out there.. but great tasting and low carb and cal. I got mine for $29 for 2lbs/30 servings
