Problem with Using MFP
I love MFP with all my heart. It has helped me lose 19 pounds so far and the community is wonderful.
Except for one thing.
It’s really not fair that you have to be over 18 to join.
People use the excuse that the conversation gets a little risque.
It’s not hard to put an “Adult Only” feature on some message boards posts.
People use the excuse that “teens have different caloric needs than adults”
I’m sorry, but I’m pretty sure that on my 18th birthday, my body isn’t just going to start burning calories slower. Every body is different.
And please stop directing me to Sparkteens. That website is set up like it’s for ten year olds, I don’t need to ask my mother permission to change my diet, I don’t need minigames, and I can cook for myself.
I am almost 17 years old. My body is nearly done growing, and I want to be healthy by the time I graduate. Staff, please consider making the tiny site tweaks that would make MFP open to teens.
(Also just to note, if 14, 15, 16, 17 year olds are going to lie about their age to get on anyway, there's really no harm to making them feel accepted, welcome, and helped.)

There may be legal issues with this. If they were to let a "non-adult" use the site and that child became anorexic or developed some other eating disorder, the parents might try to blame MFP and sue them for allowing the child to use the site. Yes, people are going to lie about their age to use it but that isn't the fault of MFP. Unfortunately, they have guidelines they have to follow as well so there's probably a very good reason why the site is 18+ only.
