Today is my first day on this website. My protein intake was considerably more than recommended. Is this a problem? Drinking two glasses of skim milk put me over by 16 grams. Let me know. Thanks

your body can only absorb so much protein. 40-70 grams each day depending on your gender, age and situation is standard , but you will need more if you are an exerciser. Protein isn’t particularly dangerous, but an over-consumption of protein may be associated with:
Weight gain. Excess calories from excess protein may be stored as body fat. Intestinal irritation. Too much protein has been linked to constipation, diarrhea and/or excessive gas. Dehydration. Experts advise drinking a half gallon of water per 100 grams of protein. Seizures. Seizures have been linked to excess protein intake – but only if insufficient amounts of water are consumed. Increase in liver enzymes. Nutritional deficiencies. Just focusing on protein intake causes some high-protein dieters to overlook other nutrients. Ensure that your diet is balanced and nutritious. Risk of heart disease. This is a bit misleading. A healthy high-protein diet is not associated with heart disease. But if you are getting all of your protein from unhealthy sources that are loaded in unhealthy fats, obviously the risk for heart disease will increase. Kidney problems. Some believe that high protein and low carbohydrate diets – when done long term – can possibly cause kidney issues, but more research needs to be done. |

also why are you drinking skim milk? skim milk should only be consumed in a protein shake or in your oats or museli . Drink waters for gods sake ! Water should be the only thing you drink if you are serious about weight loss. You are drinking away empty calories .

depending on what your activity level is really determines your protein need. The average person should get about .4 grams per pound of body weight. .6 grams per pound of body weight for semi-active people and up to 1.0 grams for highly active people (body builders etc.) Going over your number won't hurt ya really unless you are not drinking enough and then it can but it would take a lot more than 16 grams to cause you any problems. I am on a high protein diet since I am lifting and am consistently 25+ grams over my recommended levels according to MFP. Most common side effects of too much protein coupled with lack of hydration are:
Weight Gain Digestion Problems (constipation, diarrhea, or gas) Dehydration

I'm a female weighing 155 lbs. I want to loose 25 lbs. The website suggested protein is 47 grams for my height and desired weight loss.
Thanks for all the information.

According to my Dietician the standard diet should consist of 55% of your calories coming from carbs, 20% from protein and 25% from fat.
Example: For 1600 calories, 220 g would be carbs, 80 g protein and 44 g of fat. 1g of carbs = 4 calories 1g of protein = 4 calories 1g of fat = 9 calories Hope that helps! |
