When I started last fall I would do 3 real push ups and follow that with 5 girly-ones, and 3 sets of that. I no longer do them often but I can now bench press 100lbs.

im up to 25 big boy pushups at a time...

tho i rarely do them now....I bench 110 right now....that usually takes care of that....but it got easier....I just pushed for 1 more a week.....I started at 3.....and they looked horrible when I first started

Keep going. I could barely do 2-3 a year ago. I dropped and did 10 real ones in front of a construction crew one day just for fun!! bigsmile

On the 30 Day Shred I could only do like 3 pushups in the beginning. Ten days later I was doing 23. It will get better. Just gotta build up the strength. Try each day to do one more than the day before.

I agree 3 is good for starting out. I couldn't even get passed one of them. your no weakling at all.
May 23, 2012 10:46
Ha! I can't even do one! I don't have any upper arm strength... YET! :-) Keep at it you'll be doing lots more soon, I can tell!

I started http://hundredpushups.com/ and could only do 5 in a row. Now I can do 11 in a row, after having done it for 2 weeks. You'll progress in no time as long as you stick with it!

^^^^^^ THIS: I too am doing this and it WORKS! that is an iPhone app for it too. I am in week 5, still hate push ups but I um!

This. And thank you for posting it first so that I didn't feel like the only person on MFP who can't do a pushup! smile

IT WILL! I started off being able to do 0-1, depending on the day. I started doing the 30 Day Shred and doing modified push-ups until I could do about 35. Now I can do 22 non-modified in 1.5 minutes :)

Push-ups are one of those things that people define their strength on. I used to be the same with pull ups...I was up to 20 of those at one time. Now I have a hard time with push ups and pull ups are impossible. As you drop the pounds, you have less to lift, so basic physics says you will improve.

Push-ups and pull-ups are great for measuring improvement. Who cares where you start but just focus on increasing weekly and the next think you know you are in double digits! ; )

I enjoy a push-up routine I use at least once every other week replacing a bench type lift. I remember starting off with 3-4 sets of 15 and it killing me. Now I'm doing 5 sets of 25 with a 1 minute rest. I love knowing I did 125 pushups in 10 minutes!

Personally I don't focus on pull-ups but this post motivates me to add them to my routine to improve on.

Coincidentally I just this morning did a crossfit WOD that had sets of 10 pushups inspersed with lunges and rowing. By the end I had done 130 push-ups... at the beginning I couldn't do any, so you with definately get there!
