I use or have used both a protein powder and protein bars (before teaching Zumba). They both cause gas/flatulence.

Does it ever get any better?

whey protein?

I can't tolerate dairy proteins, so I use Spiru-tein protein powder and Clif Builder's Bars. Dairy (and gas) - free.

DO NOT try hemp protein. I got used to the new stuff (whey protein) after about a week. I eat the CLIF Builders bars and they don't give me any problems.

Too much protein in general causes flatulence. A good way to overcome this is to emusify protein; I combine my heavy protein sources with egg yolks (cooked of course).

I think all protein does it to some degree, but some proteins are easier than others. Experiment a little bit with different types of proteins and mixing them with different types of foods to find what your system tolerates better.

I haven't done this but you might want to try supplementing your protein powder with lecithin (another supplement) since it is the same emulsifier found in eggs. Some protein bars are actually bound with emulsifying agents (soy lecithin) to overcome this issue.

Thanks for your replies. I've actually tried a few different types of protein - cooked, in a smoothie, mixed with juice, mixed with milk....those protein bars...and I ALWAYS get gas. I've used soy protein, whey protein, pea protein, hemp protein....

Way back in the day I was drinking those SlimFast shakes and had the same issue.

I'm prepared to just deal with it - I like the way I feel and look way better. I've also learned very creative ways of controlling myself.

I tell people now that I don't have a big butt - I'm wearing nylons and have gas.
