TOPIC: Suggestions for New Forum Categories?

August 23, 2012 10:01 AM
Most definitely a FAQ/ "HEY N00B the SEARCH button is here for a reason, please dont flood the site making 8,529 topics of the same issue"

Hi. This is not a suggestion for a new forum category, but something altogether different. The forums, as I have discovered, are hotbeds of dissent, places for people to sound off and I have decided they are not for me. Instead, I would like to see weekly articles written by health professionals or members themselves aimed at disseminating specific information. They could be about exercise, recipes for people with allergies or restrictive diets, discussions about how age and sex affect weight loss. There is no limit to what MFP's members would love to know without the drama the forums engender. I have seen people asking for information regarding gastric bypass surgery and getting conflicting advice. It would be beneficial to have an actual article written by someone with medical knowledge in this area that would lay to rest all the crazy ideas people have. Book reviews of the latest diet and exercise publications. Recipes for vegetarians. How about an article aimed at people who have become overweight due to immobility after an accident. They are not able to exercise like others, so there must be information that would help them achieve their weight-loss goals. While these articles might spawn discussion, that would not be their main function. They would inform with accurate information. Think about it.

I think you would find alot of this information in the blogs section. But you would probably have to search it since there are no specific blog topics listed.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but:

For threads that hold some super-useful information, so people don't ask the same damn thing over and over and over and over again. We can just tell them to read the stickies.

Events....region specific.
May help folks meet each other and what is happening in their area.

The graph for "Reports", progress should be taller, showing more # increments. Seeing your weight loss on a graph that actually shows movement would be really encouraging. I've lost 10 lbs. and it is the slighest dip.

The YMCA's are doing a wonderful diabetes prevention program and we love to use my fitness pal! The only thing that we can't track is how what we eat fits into the recommended daily diet. For example, using the food category, we need a graph that overlays the daily recommended food groups like meats, vegetables, starches, etc. The overlayed graph compares what we ate with what is considered a balanced meal. That way when we cut back on certain foods to lose weight we will know if we are eating nutritionally sound meals each day.
Love the site and it's working for me!

How about a daily menu thread? Maybe there is one already. I haven't found it yet.

Suggested topic: Smart Weight Gain

I know this sounds strange, but I need to gain weight. After years of battling those 10 pounds, I finally made it by portion control and eating clean foods over the past year..

Seven weeks ago, I sustained an injury to my back and the pain and pain killers made it difficult to eat, culminating in a lower lumbar discectomy two weeks ago and losing 15 pounds (including muscle). Now I'm too lean for my frame and need to gain weight..

While I'd love to eat hot fudge sundaes to achieve my ideal weight, I know that will add the wrong kind of calories. I'd love to go on a "smart weight gain" program to make sure I'm eating the right food to gain the right kind of weight.

MyFitnessPal is helpful in understanding the values in what I'm eating, but any additional guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you.

How about a section where people can submit and maintain a running total of studies for or against different things like effectiveness of many meals a day, creatine, lab reports for mercury (and more) content in items like tuna or protein powder, etc... A place where one can go to actually view research on different topics rather than a 130lb bro telling people to do something because he is "cut up" and thus knows what he is talking about. Anyone want to second this?

I'm going to cast another vote for a Buy/Sell/Trade forum. There's been lots of times I've wished there was something like that here.

Dear Steven & MFP Staff:

Thank you for this site. It has been an awesome aide for me. I am no where near it yet, but what about a forum for those who have reached their goal and are at "maintenance"?

I am still a little confused about where to put suggestions. Hope I got it right this time. Love your product and would love to help make it better so will post these idea to help you get there. Note, we all know you have priorities and are managing projects / priorities and cash flow and only wish you the best balancing all of it.

I would like to see the progress chart show my end goal. I would like to see graphically if my trajectory is headed to my goal and at my given rate when am I projected to reach it. You have a small version of this that goes out 30 days when I press "complete this record" and tells me textually.

Also, another suggestion. I first started using your product through my Ipad App. I never knew you had a website app until I encouraged my wife to join using her Mac. Well, I like a little of how you implemented the app on both the website and iPad and may now switch back and forth to use the interface that works best for me.

Keep up the good work.

"Over 100 Pounds to Lose" that way we would all be in the same boat and talking the same language.

Forums that need to be here

Adults Only...NSFW

Changes: make pics easier, and I would love to be able to share a recipe with my wife (or any friend/friends) only. Like we both ate my homemade chili but we both had to create the recipe.

The site is great. It is very helpful and holds me accountable. Wondering though, is there a way you can put in for example, how many sit-ups you did or how many times a day you climb the stairs etc. as opposed to how long it took you? I live in a 2 story and am up and down the stairs quite a bit during the day but don't know how to account for that since I don't time myself.

THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL WEBSITE, just love this site!! a lot!!

I love the idea of making various GROUPs more noticeable to incoming newbies. Lotta ppl don't seem aware of the groups available on MFP.........

ONE OTHER IDEA which might not be possible, is,
if there was a way a member could 'save' or 'favorite' various recipe threads.......on MFP. No big deal, though, cuz i can save them on my computer, but, it'd be easier for those of us who use various computers if MFP has a way to archive some threads on recipes.

THANKS AGAIN for all you do!!flowerforyou

Pregnancy would be great. i am very active but i know i need more calories and such when pregnant? any suggestions

You *should* be under a physicians care during pregnancy..........and the doctor should tell you how to eat to deliver a healthy, proper weight baby.
There are GROUPS FOR PREGNANT ppl all over MFP, if you search for them.
but again, nothing should supersede your own doctor's advice about how to eat during pregnancy.

TO THE OP, see what i mean? This happens evvvvvvery day.
Ppl seem unable to search for groups, indifferent indifferent indifferent indifferent indifferent indifferent indifferent
so any possible way you couldheart make groups more noticeable, heart might help so many members here, drinker drinker
who seem unable to use search features to find groups for pregnancy, diabetes, older ppl, arthritis ppl, moms, etc etc...........

or have the 'SEARCH FOR GROUPS' button FLASH off and on or something?????????laugh

the members here
often seem unable to locate special interest groups for diabetes, older, weight-lifter, pregnancy, whatever......

since so many ppl seem to have trouble locating special interest groups (ie, pregnancy, weight lifters, low carb fans, older ppl, diabetics, whatever)
maybe if you had a blinking button that reads "Search for GROUPS" on the top border of EVERY page of MFP? not just on the 'community' page, but EVERY page of MFP..........???

just a thought.
THANKS AGAIN for all you do.flowerforyou

diabetics who are trying to lose weight and control blood sugars.

A swap & sell forum would be cool, to sell the clothes that don't fit you any more or to sell exercise equipment or tools like HRM's, Fitbits, etc. that you've outgrown.

And this isn't a forum, but a chat room would be awesome!

I would love to be able to share a recipe with my wife (or any friend/friends) only. Like we both ate my homemade chili but we both had to create the recipe.

You CAN do that...just go into the other persons diary and click on the little wrench at the top of the meal you ate then save it to your meal.

I think there needs to be a "LOOKING TO HOOK UP" category for those who treat this site as a singles forum.
