TOPIC: Suggestions for New Forum Categories?

I guess I don't understand why groups aren't an effective solution for this.

Keep in mind that MFP has demonstrated time and time again that they are not going to allow certain things in the public forums or groups. It's a decision that they've made. Whether that decision was based on business concerns or moral grounds, I can respect it. There are plenty of other outlets for mature images/discussion.

I often wonder too. I think the reason being that groups are limited to only members of that group commenting. When you've got results you want to show off it's just not the same if only the same 20 people are replying to each other.

I could be wrong but this is my guess.

I will say that as a mod of another forum anything labeled "New Users" or anything like that is most likely just going to be ignored. It's a thing with people. They don't want to start slow. They want to jump right in to the most active sections of the forum and post "Hey should I be eating back my exercise calories?"

Special forums, search functions, doesn't matter. There's really nothing you can do. The kinds of people who are going to post often repeated questions without looking will do it regardless of how you set up a site.

Agreed.

Perhaps make the Help link up top more prominent - a different color, flashing lights, middle of the page until you reach x number of posts.

I like the idea of a Rants & Raves section, as well as a clothing section.

What about sections for certain age groups? Roaring 20's, Thirsty 30's, Fabulous 40's, etc.

It is possible to show off results within the guidelines, though. Folks do it all the time.

Yep. Personally there is no way in Hades I'd post pictures of myself in my underwear, even if I looked like Elle McPherson.

True. But I don't think people are deserving of strikes for not following the "Yes bikinis No underwear" rule. I mean I haven't worn a bikini in years.. damn kids just wrecked my body...

If we're really going to be that touchy about the human body around here I don't see what the site is even for really. Look at the logo. Look at some of the advertising. I've seen people get in trouble for showing less than MFP shows me on a regular basis to keep the lights on. And good for them, advertising is important, especially to a free site. But don't show me a woman wearing nothing but painted on christmas packaging and then give me a warning for wearing my boxers low.

Success stories should be encouraged. Catering to the crowd that doesn't want to see body parts is a bad idea for a fitness site.

My 2 cents.

ETA: I'm off topic. Complaint withdrawn. This thread is about suggestions for new forum categories. Thanks to Steven for opening this thread up so users can give feedback. That's a sign of a good site with a good moderator team.

Good points.

The swimming suit vs. underwear thing is odd.

Perhaps a disclaimer on the Success Stories, that some pics might not be work-appropriate, would help.

"The Seventh Circle" - A password protected locked forum only available to those who have been banned from the regular forums. It would be moderated on a random basis with posts deleted and threads locked and or deleted and even access granted based on a random number generator and a series of equations unknown to anyone but Steven. There would be no appeals, no explanations and no mercy. Access would only be granted after a poster agreed to terms calculated to keep this place secure.

Swanny unless you've got fireballs I'm not interested.

- A forum specifically for people to find new friends (there are always so many of those on the board)
- A place to find local people and post meet-up type things

Perhaps a "Stuff I Want to Buy and Want to Know if it Rocks First/Stuff I Did Buy Which Rocks or Sucks" Category? Fitness gear and gadgets...reviews and questions.

Only if it has that exact title.

You guys have fun changing the code to accomodate that one!

It seems like a lot of these suggestions are already available in the groups area *age catagories, local people meet-ups, ect* maybe it would be good to also look into working some more on the groups? Make them easier to search, a way to view all of the groups that are available, notifications for when people in your group that aren't on your friends list post a topic?

Bingo. I think a lot of these super-specific requests could be addressed by making the groups feature easier to use for them.

I would like to see the main page changed. Get rid of the tabs that say my home, food, excercise, reports, tools community and just have all the links listed under those tabs displayed on the blue bar instead. So you dont have to click on the community tab, then click on the friends link. Would be nice to have all the links displayed on one bar.

I like the idea of a board for swapping clothes that we have outgrown to others as they go through their journey. Clothes, selling fitness items that we no longer use etc.

This is a great idea!

There's a group for that

Dear Mike & Steven, May I suggest a new forum name? Say...Emotional Support In Times of Personal Hardship. I understand posting a thread asking for support during a difficult personal time but to put it in Fun, Games and Chit Chat just seems too cruel to "slow" people like me who just click willie nillie and get *BAM*...my cat died, my father has an STD and I'm not sure who my baby's daddy is?! Not being *****y, just think we need some new forum names.

Make it easier to get ahold of you guys when someone is being a total creeper. I spent 2 hours looking for a way to get ahold of one of you for one of my mfp pals cause some troll would not leave her alone. finally got one of my other mfp friends to take over helping her.

I use a pedometer everyday and would like a spot to put in my daily steps. Right now, I just put it in the memo section. It would be awesome if you gave me a place to record it!!!

Could there be a section for people to show progress pics- without threads getting locked? I understand trying to keep the site "work friendly" but I think if someone is wearing under things that should be allowed- we are all adults.

So a section maybe titled : progress pics: and people can look if they want or not.

Jokes aside this is a very good suggestion. It's very frustrating to be a regular MFP user, reach your progress goals and get strikes and warnings for showing your results. This is a fitness site. This sort of thing should be encouraged, not get people in trouble.

^^^ THIS!

I am all for "Arena" (AKA Fight to the death)

Where people can carry on fighting their corner until they win or back off. That would be awesome.

So many threads get locked just when they get interesting. I love a good verbal fight and there are some incredibly intelligent people on here that have made me stop and think more deeply about things. So frustrating when you go back to a thread to catch up on the argument and find it locked. Drives me mad.

You may need a disclaimer I would like to suggest - WARNING May contain nuts.

Use the measurements function. You can add or change the items you want to measure, including steps taken.
