Hi all, I've been intermittent fasting for a few weeks. I liked doing the 16 hour fast with an 8 hour eating window. However I was thinking of extending the fast a few hours so I would only eat one meal a day, instead of lunch and dinner-type window.

Before I was doing a low-carb diet, but now I'm going back to just calorie counting so I can have more flexibility (I tend to eat out a lot).

What do you guys eat after/during a fasting period? Is eating all of my calorie allotment within just a few hours a bad idea?

Meal timing and frequency have little to do with losing weight, it is ultimately calories in versus calories out. If you can handle eating only one meal a day I don't think it will cause any issues.

No, its not a bad idea. But if you have to eat in the region of 3k calories, you might struggle to plough through in one sitting. My diaries open, you can see how i break my fast but typically its some cous cous, some meat and some veg with an approx breakdown of 100 c 100 p 30 - 40 f. I eat around 3k per day

see, I think I am one of the most boring IF'ers out there! tongue I always end by 24hrs in the afternoon. So I stick to the light stuff -- love fruits, or veggies after fasting (see? told you) I do not get all my calories right after a 24 hr fast, I eat something light that afternoon, go to bed, and the next day I eat normal. I never had a problem doing it this way. I do agree with NYMPH3T4M1N3. If your minimum is pretty high, then do not try to force them down your throat in one sitting. GL!

When it comes down to it a 24 hour and a 16/8 fast are different beasts. A 24 hour fast is not generally broken eating all your calories, but by eating a normal meal, then continuing to eat normally. A 16/8 fast breaks the fast with an 8 hour eating window where you eat all your calories before fasting again for 16 hours. This is not to say you cannot do a 24 hour fast and try to break it with eating all your calories, but as stated, that can be difficult to do in one sitting. I personally use a hybrid of the two, I do 24 hour fasts 1 or 2 times a week where I break the fast with a 500-800 calorie meal then finish my day and go to bed. Then I will not eat again until 12-2PM the next day doing the 16/8 pattern seeking to eat all my calories in that 8 hour feeding window. I don't hold to this religiously, but that is how I often eat.

Thanks for the info everyone! I did two days of 20/4 fasting, and then today I barely made it to lunch, so I'll split my meals over two meals. I think I'll switch between 20/4 and 16/8 whenever I can.

I did 2 x 24 hour fasts last week and plan to do more this week. At the end of a fast I usually eat a small meal, normally no more than 500 calories worth, I also try and make sure they are nutritional meals rather than empty calories if I can help it :)

Lately I have been doing Pumpkin Pie Protein Fluff. If you want the recipe it is in the protein fluff group in the whey protein recipe topic. Not my creation, but great levels of protein and fibre, so it is very filling.

I eat a normal meal after fasting. So if I normally eat between 500-700 for each meal I will eat that same amount after a fast. I normally will eat dinner one night and fast to dinner the next night that way I still eat everyday.

I'm following the Eat Stop Eat program. I have probably done about 5 or 6 fasts now, but after most of those I ate my daily calorie allowance (1200). I've had one so far actually following the program to the tee. I'm hoping today will be the same and I'll only eat around one meals worth of calories (600?)

I usually eat a snack and a meal. The fewer calories the better, I try not to go over 600. Today I am thinking about a slice of golden syrup loaf, or some sweets, and some kind of pasta. :) Not the healthiest plan but better than 600 calories of muffins!

unless you are a VERY small female, 1200cals is not you're maintenance so eating 1200 on a fasting day is perfectly fine if you want to. Depends on the intake for the rest of the week really.
February 6, 2012 3:00 PM
Agree with chris - 1200 is fine however it just depends on the overall caloric deficit that you're achieving. I normally eat a smaller meal at the end of the fast and then eat a bit more the next day.

Thanks for the replies, I am pretty small (5"2) :p but my maintenance is around 1600 - 1800 I believe. With ESE though I am still cutting calories on other days but am slowly upping this as I'm close to my goal weight. I'm now trying to eat at my BMR most days (apart from fasting days) which is more like 1310 calories.
