I've had this issue when I was not holding the phone steady enough or if it was in poor lighting. Especially if I'm holding the bar code and the phone. I found it easier to flatten the bar code as much a possible and try different lighting.

Another question, I use my Motorola Xoom with MFP. It is almost always blurry when I use the scanning feature. It still works but its always out of focus. I was wondering if you aligned the focus for phones and didn't consider android tablets? As an aside, are you considering releasing an android tablet app??

is the scanner part of the fitness app or do we need to download a barscanner ( If so which one is best?)

I'm scanning my correctly but it's still not working. I've tried getting closer and moving a little farther away. I've tried the barcode scanner by itself, the scanner program I downloaded, and it works but the one on My Fitness Pal won't work. Any suggestions?

I'm brand new to the app. Mine scans just fine, but then immediately shuts the app down & doesn't store the info. Have to manually put in all my info. I tried uninstalling & reinstalling, but still have the same problem. Help! Using an touch.

Is there any particular reason that the Android application implements its own scanner instead of just using ZXing's IntentIntegrator or even implementing the com.google.zxing.client.android.SCAN Intent? Seems a lot easier for both the devs and the users.

+1

The dev could even make it an option for which app to use for the scanner (MyFitnessPal, ZXing, etc.)

That's pretty much what Intents do. It's the program calling out to the system going "HEY! I WANNA DO SOMETHING!" (in this case scan) and each program that can do it reports back. If there's more than one, then the operating system lets the user choose which to use.

Intents are one of the reasons Android is pretty awesome, actually. Programs don't have to know about each other specifically, just how the intent works.

android market... search for "calorie counter"... Select the one that is MFP... download and install... log in using the same ID and password as you use here...

The Android scanner works fine for me and have not encountered any problems as of yet. Using HTC Desire HD.

I am NOT a techy kind of person so I need some help here....can I use the scanner app with my iphone? If so, do I take the pic, it scans the food item in and then automatically sends to MFP log or do I have to send it there manually? thanks in advance!

I have an app for Kindle Fire. Since the Fire has no camera looks like scanner won't work on it. Correct? Judd

Sorry to sound really stupid, but I just got the Android phone and downloaded the MFP app. So, just what is scanning? What is it for and is it something that I should be using?

I like it, it's convenient. go to add food and next to the search window there is a little barcode, tap it and your camera will start. follow the instructions from the first post and either

a) the food will register and ask you how many servings of what portion you would like to add

-or-

b) it won't find it, you have to search anyway but then once you find it in the data base that food is linked to that bar code.

I have found a few wrong foods linked to barcodes though. I actually was responsible for one of those, it was done on accident and I corrected it. There is an option for "wrong food" if you need it.

Good Luck

Thank you avafrisbee. Now, another stupid question. Do we scan the barcodes on packages at the store and this feature will add that food to our diaries?

Barcode Scanner - it is 5star and comes up first on the market list.

Hi,

I recently started using MFP again after a long (6 months or more) break. I was amazed at how well the bar code scanner was working. It wouldn't even appear to have focused and I would have results (typically 1 second, it was really really fast!). Today the app updated to version 2.2.012 and it has gotten much much worse. I did read the directions in the very 1st post, and have been doing it the correct way. The focus seems to hunt back and forth, and different parts of the red line turn green, then back to red again. I almost gave up on one wrapper, even after taking the food out, making sure the wrapper was flat and did not have any glare from the lamp. It finally worked. If some code related to the bar code scanner has changed, please please change it backsmile.

Thanks,
Jon

PS. I guess I should add this is an Android phone, a HTC Incredible.

I have pretty much given up on my android trying to scan bar codes with the myfitnesspal app.

I understand encompassing the entire bar code with the scan line running through all the bar code lines.

My phone keeps trying to autofocus and zips in and out of focus no matter how close or how far I hold it from the bar code.

I believe I have successfully scanned one food item from a cardboard container. Everything else I have tried for at least a solid minute or two before giving up and entering it manually.

My phone just can't seem to "focus" on the task at hand.

Just downloaded the app for the first time two days ago.

I have a Samsung "Transform" Android
