Dear Android App Users,

I've posted two images below to help to illustrate the correct use of the scanner in the Android App. Please let us know if you continue to experience scanning issues after applying these suggestions.

Most importantly, you must make sure that the red line in the scanner window is lined up to run THROUGH all of the bars of the barcode. The UPC bars should be running vertically in your scanner window, and the red line in the scanner should run horizontally, crossing all of the barcode bars.

If the red line is running parallel to the barcode bars, the barcode will not register.

So, in good lighting, hold your phone's camera head-on to the barcode, with your phone in portrait orientation and the barcode reading left-to-right on your screen, and you should get consistent results.

I'll leave this post unlocked in case these instructions don't resolve your scanning issues. Let us know what your experience is, and we'll make every attempt to resolve the issues swiftly.

Regards,
Steven

The issue I am having is that it keeps trying to read, the red line switches from red to green and back again repeatedly. It will sometimes tell you it can't find an item and the a minute later after repeating it will find the item. Sometime I can get it to scan an item but I literally have to brace my hand on something so it doesn't shake, where as before there wasn't that need. As far as lighting day light full sun works well, but when its 30 degrees( a little sarcasm, but pretty close truth)?

The old scanner you could of drove by 35 mph at midnight and you would have gotten the product scanned.

Also you could enter a recipe using the scanner, now when scanning second item it always puts you out at the main screen.
so I enter recipes through website, scanner was easier though.

Thanks for this report. We're releasing an Android App update today that will fix the scanning to recipes bug.

I'm having the same problem with adding ingredients to a recipe using my Samsung Galaxy sII ...I scan it and it adds it to my main food log screen instead of the recipe I'm trying to enter so I have to go back and add it manually and erase the other entry to my food log. It's a bit frustrating.

So glad I read this!

Thanks and I'll look forard to the update.

The update should already be available. Try updating the app through Android Market and let us know if it's working for you again.

I did the update and was able to add a recipe using the scanner, only had two ingredients but it worked. However I had to stand directly below my light before it would read the barcode and then it still took a little bit on the first ingredient. If your going for if it works or not, then it works, but it is still not as good as it was before. Oh well, I still love the service, thanks Mike and Steven.

This is the problem I've been having - I'll download the update and see if it improves things.

I am also having problems scanning barcodes. My red line always wants to go up and down rather than sideways. I used this program less than a month ago and the scanner was working fine. I haven't received any type of update for my Android phone yet but will be watching for one. It's a lot more work when the scanner doesn't work.

Just deleted the app off of my Samsung Transform and reloaded latest update, and the barcode scanner still does not work correctly. The red line keeps trying to read the bar code but nothing ever happens. 2 versions ago was way way better, I could scan a barcode in seconds with no problems ever, in dim light low light bright light didn't matter. I have tried everything to think of but nothing seems to help. Just go back to the old program!

I was used to using the old barcode scanner on my Galaxy S2, which I would hold horizontally. It would read the item immediately. With the new scanner I was still trying it horizontally and it wouldn't scan anything. What little it would scan it would tell me it couldn't find a match. Now that I know to hold it vertically it works perfectly.

I also downloaded the update and the scanner is still not working for me. I have a samsung transform. Is there anyway to back to the older version of the app?

I do not yet have the app, but does it provide the calorie count for the food item or just the food item?

Works fine for me on my HTC desire.

The scanner reads in dim light, the camera just adjust itself and Robert's your mother's brother.

None of the versions I've used have ever worked fast enough to scan something whilst travelling at 10mph let alone 35!

Only timeit struggles is when the Baroda is on a plastic sheet/bag and its wrinkled.

Yes. Basically.

It's accuracy depends on the info that's been imputed.

I have an LG Enlighten and the scanner was a bit buggy at first but I could get it to work with patience. It seems a steady hand is a must now where the old scanner had a little bit more "give". I had the same issue inputting a recipe but I have not tried to do so since it has been updated. I actually like the vertical scanning as opposed to the old horizontal scanning despite the finicky nature of it now. Maybe the aspect ratio had something to do with that...the horizontal scanner had more pixels captured horizontally and thus had more information to successfully recognize an item????? (just a thought)

Either way, MyFitnessPall is a vital part of my weight loss transformation.

I used to have no problems with the android app, it would scan within a second...and it would scan if I held my phone horizontially. Now, though...it takes many, many, many seconds even when I hold it vertically as suggested. I get so mad, I want to through the phone and quit the app altogether. Why can't it be like it used to be? If is as if myfitnesspal hates androids and only loves iphones. Frustrating. I want this app to work with me, not against me. I am wasting my time with the damn scanner!!!!

MFP being Droid'ist??? lol

It works perfectly fine on my HTC Desire.

I updated the app a few days ago and now the scanner isn't working. Very similar to other posts.....hope there is a fix soon!
