TOPIC: Define 100% of Calcium Recommended Intake?

May I assume that MyFitnessPal bases 100% of calcium requirements on the loosely recommended 1000 mg and does not factor in age for recommendations? That's fine with me, I'll just set my personal limit to 1500 by making it 150% since I'm over 50. I just need to understand MFP's baseline.

I've been wondering this as well. When I put in the %ages to nutrition information, that is based on a 2000 calorie diet... but most of us are not on a 2000 calorie/day diet. I also know there are different guidelines for different ages and want to keep that in mind.

i dont know what the baseline is... i do know that Magnessium changes everything when it comes to taking calcium! Magnessium helps your body to your bones absorb calcium... so if your not getting enough Magnessium to go with your intake your gonna get desposits and other not so fun things going on.

i dont know much about this but here is a bit of outside info on your question

Did MFP ever answer this queston about what RDA is used for calcium, iron, vit. A, etc? Also are their plans to add other trace minerals such as magnesum, phosphorus, ,etc.

I agree! We need to know what the percentages mean in terms of International Units or milligrams, etc. The guidelines for the RDA of calcium and Vitamin D have just changed. I don't know how much calcium is in 100%. And, as we know, women and men differ, the old and the young differ. Please allow us to see the % of nutrients in other terms.

I agree, the values of Calcium, etc. should be listed in mg, not percentages. We should be able to set our daily desired amount, not to mention add other vitamins and minerals we want to track!

I, too, would love to see an MFP response to this one.

Suggestions: list calcium (in mg) AND allow us to set our own requirements (since they differ for some of us, per our doctors' instructions).

I read that you should to only take 500 mg of calcium at a time because that is how much that your body will actually absorb at one time. So take 500 mg with breakfast and the other 500 mg with dinner. If i remember right i read that out in shape magazine. it could be a myth but it makes sence. i hope that helps. good luck

Daily recommended calcium intake is 1000mg for an adult between the ages of 19-25. So calculating the percentages directly reflects the mg content of the nutrient.

100mg calcium in a serving is 10% of the daily recommendation
10mg calcium in a serving is 1% of the daily recommendation

Tracked as Percentage of Daily Value (%DV) - based on a 2,000 calorie diet (per standard US food labeling)
Vitamin A
Vitamin C

That 2000 calorie diet DV for Calcium is 1000mg.

OK, so it seems this has (at least partially) been changed, because I can see the exact amount of calcium I have consumed. HOWEVER, my 'goal' is set as 100mg of calcium, which is ridiculous! Any way to change the goal settings for individual nutrents and/or percentages? I know for example that at Calorie Count I cam set that I am vegetarian which automatically changes some parameters, and then I can also increase my target of protein (because I'm training for a half marathon). Can I do any of these things here? If so: how? If not: can we get these features, please?! :-)

the "100" you're seeing in calcium, iron, vitamin A and C is "100% of the suggested daily amount based on a 2000 calorie diet" not necessarily 100 mg as it's a % of the DV that is represented by the "goal" for those items

MFP Moderator, can we find out if the DV changes in MFP if we are on a 1350 calorie diet? or 1500 calorie per day diet

The "DV" as listed are from nutrition labels which are supposed to be for a 2000 calorie a day diet, but using them "as unchanging" regardless of your personal calorie goal would mean "every user should be getting 100% of the suggested micronutrients" barring of course personal health requirements such as being in certain age groups or at risk groups that would suggest you would need more calcium etc.

And of course the 100% DV is based on the US daily recommendations which could be quite different from other countries around the world. I can think of a few (not necessarily ones that MFP tracks) where the US suggested intake is about 1/5th of the minimum other countries suggest.

I just wanted to bring this topic back up in the posts and I believe by responding to it that happens,,,, not sure???? I still don't really understand the calicium recording. If I am suppose to have 1500 mg. a day and I consume about 1500 calories what should show in my calicum intake for the day? If anyone understands this better than I do I would really appreciate more information.

The "100%" that MFP is storing is the US suggestion of 1000 mg a day, if you "need" more than that then figure out how much more.. which you did post in the thread so...
if you need 1500mg you need 150% of the suggested value.

Now as for the 'foods you eat" it's possible to eat 1500 calories or even 3000 calories worth of food and not hit the 100% daily intake amount, just depends on what you're eating. You could also eat 1500 calories and get double the daily amount, again just depends on what you're eating. If you're eating things high in calcium or fortified or enriched or whatever other fancy name they have for the ones where it's added (or supplementing) ...

Is this board even monitored? I also have calcium, magnesium and vitamin D requirements. Are there any plans to change %DV to actual numbers so we can determine if we are getting what we need from the food we eat? Fitness is not just weight. Please consider this change.

+1. Very frustrating and considering using a different app. I need to track calcium and have no idea what your assessment of 100% translates to actual mg.

The 100% daily value is based on the recommendations for a 2000 calorie diet, which is 1000 mg of calcium per day if you are consuming 2000 calories a day. If you are consuming a different amount of calories a day, but still need to reach a calcium target, you just need to do the conversions. For example, if your daily calorie target is 1750, a 100% dv of calcium would be 875mg, based on the 1000 mg in a 2000 calorie diet. This is calculated by dividing your target calories of 1750 by 2000 and applying that % to 1000 mg of calcium. Now you need to change your daily % target to reflect the amount of calcium you need to consume. So if 875mg = 100% of your daily value in a 1750 calorie diet, but you need to be consuming 1000 mg of calcium, you should divide 1000mg by 875mg. This will give you 114%. You should adjust your %DV to 114% to ensure you're getting enough calcium in your diet based on the 1750 calories you're eating.
