About Me

I am an Elementary Literacy Specialist at a charter school in the city of Buffalo, NY. This is my 4th year in this position, but my 6th year in the profession.

My last two years of college (2001-2003) claimed my health and body. I tend to pack my schedule full, and at the time I didn't realize how important it is to also schedule time to take care of myself. Over the course of four years of undergrad I gained 130lbs. I like to blame it on my boyfriend-now-husband who introduced me to the Hamburglar and Stuffed Crust Pizza....but really there is noone else to blame but myself. At 305 lbs I joined Weight Watchers in August 2005. I successfully lost 75lbs in 7 months. I ran out of money and felt I could continue the journey on my own. I maintained for a few months but then little by little the weight crept back on. I gained back 43lbs over the last 4 years--which angers me beyond belief because I said I would never let myself get back to where I started.

A few months ago I somehow got roped into training for the Disney World Marathon 2010 and also fundraising $3800 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through Team in Training. I don't think I truly understood the challenge I was taking on...but now I'm in the middle, and there's no turning back. Team in Training will train me to run a marathon in exchange for me fundraising $3800 for their foundation...so between training and fundraising I have been extremely busy in the past couple weeks.

My goal is to FINISH the marathon--I'm not going for time (although it's always in the back of my mind.) They keep the course open for 7 hours, and my goal is "anything under 7!"

As I began the training, I figured I might as well put effort into eating well because it just doesn't make sense to put so much time into running if I'm going to follow it up with pizza, tacos, and hamburgers.

In addition to the Team in Training program, I also get support from the trainers at my gym. Right now I am participating in a "Buffalo's Biggest Loser" program where I am currently 8th out of 25 participants (grand prize is $1000!!!) I also paid for a 6 week stength training program where I exercise with a group of 12 other people 2 days a week under the supervision of a trainer. I HAVE ALL THE TOOLS AVAILABLE TO ME...I JUST HAVE TO USE THEM.

Why I Want To Get In Shape

At first it was about the number on the scale, but honestly...I'm 5'10" with a verrry large bone frame. I have always been a "big" person--so recently I have been trying to switch my thinking from what it says on the scale to how my clothes fit and how I feel during my workouts.

I want to get in shape so that I can effortlessly walk up stairs, moan and groan less when I have to bend over or stand up from sitting on the ground, and buy a pair of pants from a regular store with no problem or question of if they will fit.

And most importantly...I refuse to start a family until my life is in order--and getting my health under control falls into that category.

My Inspirations

  • Before I turn 30:
  • I want to be at a healthy goal weight and have a solid maintanence plan.
  • I want to run a marathon and complete a triathlon.
  • I want to have a healthy relationship with food and exercise.
