Fat Kids...Whose Fault Is It?
It's no secret there is a childhood obesity problem in America...there is also an adult obesity problem in America. So whose fault is it that our kids are fat?
As adults we generally do the grocery shopping for our households. Our kids eat what we buy - and so do we. If we purchase healthy, clean food - our family stays healthy. If the cart is full of cookies, chips, ice cream, and processed foods - that's the diet that we and our children eat. While it's true that fast food serving sizes have increased, restaurant portions are out of control, and we can't control what our kids eat 24/7 - basic nutrition starts at home.
I've seen some posts on MFP where someone has been very proud of the fact that they took their children to McDonalds...but they didn't eat only a couple of bites. Really? Is that something to be proud of?
Someone else eats a different dinner than they fix for the family? Craziness! Your family deserves to eat healthy - as do you!
Others complain about what their children eat for school lunch - that's an easy fix - pack your kids a healthy lunch!
There are many who believe that America is fat because of the food industry, portion sizes served at restaurants, and kids spending too much time in front of the TV or the computer. Yes, these are contributing factors. But, it is our choice as adults what we put in our mouths! It is our choice what we feed our children and how we teach them about nutrition, it is our choice to allow children to sit all day instead of being active (this is a do what I do - if you are active your children will be much more active); but mostly it is our choice to take control of our lives and our children's lives and make sure we are all making healthy food choice.
Do I eat chips, ice cream, birthday cake, etc.? Absolutely! It's a matter of not eating those types of food often and when I eat them, I eat them in small quantities. As an adult we have to make those same decisions and rations for our children. Am I on MFP because I'm part of the obesity problem in America? Yes! But I'm here to do my part to stop the madness!
So come on people, it's time to take control. Be an example for your children, teach your children, and be active with your children. This is the only way we will solve the obesity crises - childhood and adult!
The choice is your's - fat kids, fat adults or a healthy lifestyle. Make that choice starting now!
