Introducing the MyFitnessPal App Gallery

We are excited today to announce that MyFitnessPal has partnered with the world’s best apps and devices to make tracking your fitness activity and weight even easier.   Now you can link your MyFitnessPal account with the partners featured in our new App Gallery and automatically sync data from partner services to MyFitnessPal.

We have 4 new types of partners to help you achieve your fitness goals:

  1. Scales - Wirelessly sync your weight and body fat % to your MyFitnessPal account with connected scales by Withings and Fitbit Aria. No need to manually enter your weight ever again!

  2. Activity Trackers - Measure your steps and calories burned with hardware devcies from MIO, BodyMedia, and Fitbit. Or use pedometer apps from Striiv or runtastic.  Watch as your MyFitnessPal goals are automatically adjusted to take into account your actual daily activity.

  3. Run Tracking Apps - Track your distance and speed via GPS when you go for a run, walk, or bike ride with Endomondo, and runtastic. The calories you've burned will automatically sync with MyFitnessPal.

  4. Cardio Devices – Track your favorite exercise activity – measure runs with the Scosche RHYTHM, swims with FINIS’s Swimsense and rides on the Expresso exercise bike.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be blogging about each partner in detail but below is a quick introduction to each new partner.   Check back often – we hope to be adding more connected partners soon!

  • BodyMedia – Pioneer in wearable body monitoring products that have been clinically proven to bolster weight loss efforts and will soon be used to manage other health conditions.

  • Endomondo – A popular fitness tracking app and social network that turns a GPS-enabled smartphone into a personal trainer and social motivator capable of tracking workouts, analyzing performance and allowing users to compete virtually with friends.

  • FINIS Swimsense – Interactive watch that captures everything about your swim including laps, total distance, calories burned, stroke count, distance-per-stroke, and much more.

  • Fitbit – Makers of the popular Fitbit wireless trackers and Aria Wi-Fi scale that track daily activity, sleep, and weight, allowing users to set goals, track trends and compete with friends for extra motivation.

  • Interactive Fitness – The Expresso stationary bikes make cardio exercise fun by enabling interactive and engaging workouts.

  • MIO – Innovative heart rate monitoring devices to track heart rate, calorie burn and motion.

  • runtastic – Mobile apps that track running, walking and other fitness activities and provide comprehensive usage data including pace, distance, step counts, calories and more.

  • Scosche RHYTHM – Comfortable arm-strap pulse monitor that provides users with a simple way to manage, track and analyze their workouts.

  • Striiv – Motivational app that makes fitness "play" and gets real results. Turn taking steps into playing a game, donating to charity and competing with friends.

  • Withings – Creators of the world’s first WiFi connected personal weight scale that automatically records body weight, lean & fat mass, and calculated body mass index (BMI).

Great to see this, but how will you handle the differences in calories burnt?

Endomondo reckons my 11 mile bike commute to work burns around 730kcals.
But MyFitnessPal says it's 605kcals (bicycling, moderate).

I reckon both are overestimating and I usually override it in MFP to 450kcals which seems more reasonable.

In addition to the other's request for Garmin Connect, how about TrainingPeaks (www.trainingpeakes.com). Lot's of trainers, both online and in person use TrainingPeaks to prescribe workouts and track progress. It collects heart rate data from Garmin and Polar, plus a few others. Other useful data includes how much time is spent within each heart rate zone.

Having time, distance, heart rate min/avg/max, running/cycling pace min/avg/max, and calories burn would be the most useful information for most folks.

All of this data is included within Garmin's TCX file. I understand that endomondo can already grab this data from Garmin Connect. It would be nice to have to use half a dozen programs just to get your data inputted into one system for an overall view.

stepping off soapbox now....

BUT

I'd imagine the choice of apps isn't solely driven by open API choice, so some reasoning as to why you choose runtastic would be appreciated.

It would also be good to get a clear view on what data is being synced and in what direction. Been stung in the past (Runkeeper and Fitbit) with lack of clarity around this. It's my data!

This is awesome news/update and look forward to seeing what other apps get included in the future (ie. Runkeeper, hint). Could you explain how the info is synced? Does MFP analyze the data from the exteral app and calculate its calorie burn, or does it use what the external app calculates only. Is there something that determines gross calorie burn vs net calarie burn. This can have a big impact on eating back calories. Thanks again for making MFP an awesome app!

Which if these devices syncs wirelessly to my iPhone and MyFitnessPal? Seems most if not all of them require connecting to a computer to upload the data. MIO Active connect looks like a great product except it needs to connect to a computer. In the mobile age, seems like a major feature lacking to not have wireless (Bluetooth) connectivity.

Thanks for all the hard work MFP Team! I only wished I used any of these apps.
Runmeter (dailymile) would be nice. I use it for my outdoor cardio because at the time I bought it, it was the only app that had the option to set up interval training.
iFit would be nice, as I have it both on my elliptical and my incline trainer.
In all reality, I don't need any app integration, just having the option to add mileage to the running/walking/riding etc would be nice to have when you're entering your exercises instead of having to use notes.

th3bunnyofdoom wrote 24 months ago:
I love your app, and your database is by far the best out there. Thanks for the effort on the new app linking, although I think theres a small bug. Your software seems to detect ALL activity as excess activity. However, devices such as the Bodymedia gowearfit actually monitor all calorie expenditure, including while you're sedentary. Consequently, this results in an inflated "Calories remaining number".
To illustrate: Lets imagine I am allowed 2000 calories intake, and assume my normal activity (including resting calorie burn) is 3000 calories, so the net calorie deficit is 1000 per day, which will result in a 2lbs loss per week. However, with the way the app is set up, any calorie burn from the bodymedia app is perversely added (which would be fair if it was excess calories). If I was to burn 3000 calories (which would be my normal activity), the myfitnesspal app would give me licenese to eat another 2000 calories. So I'd end up gaining 4lbs per week if I was to run with the updated numbers....

super excited to hear this... i use the bodymedia fit armband. it will take some getting used to the way it now syncs together, as it looks like the "target" calories is assuming the exercize goal is met each day. so on days i dont work out i will have to eat less than the target calories and manually do the math. we'll see how that goes... hopefully it will work the way it's supposed to! :) at least linking these up is a step in the right direction, IMO. ;)

Have lost 30 lbs in the last year and when I started using my-fitness pal I lost an additional 28 but now cannot keep track of anything.

Wahoo does the job as my HRM and exercise tracker and when I finally get my act together and get my bike rolling again it will step into the roll of bicycle computer as well which means that the ability to bounce even the basic data of time and calories from Wahoo to MFP would be a most joyous event.

You should give them a call, they have some pretty cool engineers over there - they might be able to lend a hand with it getting it happening.

PLEASE & THANK YOU!!!!!!!! You have a growing sub-group of users!! I am a bariatric post-surgery person and am representing many people on several forums (including obesityhelp and vertical sleeve talk and WEB MD Weight Loss forums) when I ask if there could/will ever be a way to customize the calories and prioritize protein. We look for protein rather than calories. the rest, carbs, fat and specific sugars, sodium all come after getting enuf protein. We also have higher protein needs. I am sad when the program keeps telling me that I am not getting enough calories and also when my protein grams are in the negatives and red.

Clearly you have a LOT of Bariatric/Weight Loss people using your system (AND WE HAVE TO IGNORE A LOT). YOu can tell by the long lists and types of protein supplements and multivites (bariatric advantage, Unjury, Isopure...)

Most importantly would be a fix so that we can monitor our protein intake as a priority and adjust the cals appropriately. thanks!!
r5m8 wrote 19 months ago:
Just to confirm what I was trying to say above is that we'd love to customize our own personal nutritional goals. Despite your recommendations (which are for healthy "normal" people) Bariatric post-ops eat ABOUT 500-600 calories per day, about 70 - 100 grams of protein and then about 40 carbs and 30 grams of fat. Thank you for your time and efforts on our behalf. 160,000 people per year are having weight loss surgeries and the number is growing (and we're shrinking too)!! :) Thanks soooo much!

The customizing of goals isn't working - I can change the calories ingested/burned, but the profile part stubbornly insists I will drop 1 lb/week regardless, unless I go to dangerously low Kcal ingested.
And who can say exactly how many Kcal I burn doing i.e. squats vs what another person burns? It depends on intensity and lean bodyweight, and I don't see any tables/calculations for either.

The app does not work well at all on a windows phone. How about fixing the bugs? I have installed and uninstalled it numerous times, yet no fix. It freezes when scanning barcodes, and sometimes just freezes when "loading" daily information. It's very frustrating!!!

I would love to connect to my Moves (by ProtoGeo) app! Have been collecting data with is for over a year now and it's the only app I have always on. Now I uses MovesExport to periodically export to Runkeeper on the background but I'd love to connect to Moves directly (without the delay)

I use a Hexoskin to collect data while working out. The API is free and open and it looks like it should be a cinch to connect to MFP :).

it works in the back ground so you don't have to remember to activate it, great if you have an active lifestyle.
I have endomondo, but keep forgetting to start it every time I get on my bike or take the dogs out.
