5 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Lips

Healthy lips are desirable and hard to get. There are small changes that you can make in your everyday life to help your lips get and stay healthy. There five little tricks will help you maintain healthy and soft lips.

Keep Hands Off

The more you touch your lips the more damage you are causing. Your hands will remove the much needed moisture from the lips. They will also damage skin cells causing them to become dry and cracked. While some people have a habit of touching their mouth this is one habit that needs to be broken in order to keep the lips healthy. The less you touch the better off your lips are.

Eat a Healthy Diet

There are some foods that provide a great deal of vitamins and minerals that are needed to keep the body healthy including the lips. Foods that have a lot of Vitamin B will help protect the lips from exposure to the sun. Foods with Vitamin C are filled with antioxidants. Carrots, berries, leafy greens, and even fruits such as mangos make the lips healthy and luscious. Foods that have omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon will also give lips the nutrients that they need. The best thing for the lips is water. Drinking enough water each day will help keep the skin hydrated which is responsible for a healthy glow and healthy looking skin including on the lips.

Exercise Your Lips

The body needs exercise to stay strong and youthful. The same is true for the muscles in the lips. There are many exercises that can be done to work out these muscles and help prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming. The healthy products to help prevent the lips from sagging use your fingers to lift up the corner of the mouth. You do not need to touch your lips. Fold your lips so that they cover your teeth. Relax and then repeat this exercise 10 more times. There are other exercises to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the lips. Close your mouth and pucker your lips. Slowly move your lips to the right and hold. Do the same only move them to the left? Move then up and then down. Repeat these movements at least 10 more times.

Use the Right Lip Balm

Not all lip balms are made the same. Some of the flavored lip balms can actually cause you to lick your lips more often which harms them. When selecting a lip balm be sure to find one that has SPF for additional sun protection. Lips balms are meant to lock in the moisture and only need to be applied a couple of times a day. These balms can even come in tinted colors so they can be used to replace lipstick which can lead to dryness of the lips. Choosing a right lip balm help to get rid of dry and itchy lips.

Know When to See a Doctor

There are times when we need to admit something is too much for us to handle and see a doctor for help. The same is true for our lips. If we make changes in our life and go out of our way to protect the lips without results it is time to call a doctor. If you have an outbreak of cold sores and over the counter treatment is not helping you need to call your doctor. If you lips are dry and nothing seems to be working see a doctor to make sure it is not a sign of infection. An antibiotic may have to be prescribed. If dry lips are accompanied by headaches and fatigue it could be a sign of a more serious problem such as a vitamin deficiency and needs the help of a doctor. Chelitis is a condition where a crusty substance from the lips forms in the corners of the mouth. This can be an effect or excessive licking or biting. If this condition does not go away on its own antibacterial or antifungal medication may need to be prescribed by a doctor.

Eating well and moisturizing the lips will help them look and stay healthy. Some simple changes in everyday life can improve the skin on the lips making them look smooth, soft, and healthy.
