Aspartame

Today I read an article on Yahoo Heath about soda and its effects on your body. I don't drink soda very often, maybe a can or two a month, if that. But the article said diet soda (which I NEVER drink because I think it's disgusting) contains aspartame, which has been linked to obesity and causes increased cravings for sweets.

I realized just now that the yogurt I usually eat with my lunch contains aspartame. I'm sure it's not a huge amount, but I'm going to stop eating this yogurt and start eating REAL fruit instead. Such a simple decision, but I would have never thought about it if I hadn't read that article today.

Thanks ericaalicia! I like yogurt so it's nice to know there's some without aspartame.

Aspartame has been linked to obesity because ignorant people think that by saving on the calories with a diet soda, they can eat more with their meals. For instance, someone orders a meal from a fast food place, not the best idea anyway, but since they are getting a diet soda, they can have that fry super-sized. As far as my research and understanding, that's the only reason Aspartame would be labeled as such. As for the sweets cravings, I know some times I like having a glass of diet soda and some chocolate but I'd want it the same with or without the aspartame'd liquid. That's me though.

Here are the ingredients for Yoplait Light: Cultured Pasteurized Grade A Nonfat Milk, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Peaches, Modified Cornstarch, Nonfat Milk, Kosher Gelatin, Natural Flavor, Citric Acid, Tricalcium Phosphate, Aspartame, Potassium Sorbate Added to Maintain Freshness, Colored with Annatto Extract, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3. besides High Fructose Corn Syrup, it's got aspartame too. Yoplait is the LAST yogurt I would choose. Try stonyfield farms or another more natural yogurt. Tip: anything that states "light" on the package usually contains artificial sugar.

Aspartame is a CHEMICAL.... why would you want to put a chemical in your body? Aspartame and obesity has nothing to do with ignorant people eating more because they think they saved a few calories on their diet soda. Taken from http://www.wnho.net/aspartame_makes_you_fatter.htm (please check out... there are also a ton of great aspartame related links on there) 'After having been consulted by thousands of overweight people suffering with problems concerning the liver and/or metabolism I can assure you that aspartame will not help you in any way, indeed it will help you to gain unwanted weight. This has been my experience, and there are logical reasons to explain the fattening and bloating effects of aspartame. When you ingest the toxic chemical aspartame it is absorbed from the intestines and passes immediately to the LIVER where it is taken inside the liver via the liver filter. The liver then breaks down or metabolizes aspartame to its toxic components - phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methanol. This process requires a lot of energy from the liver which means there will be less energy remaining in the liver cells. This means the liver cells will have less energy for fat burning and metabolism, which will result in fat storing. Excess fat may build up inside the liver cells causing "fatty liver" and when this starts to occur it is extremely difficult to lose weight. In my vast experience any time that you overload the liver you will increase the tendency to gain weight easily. Aspartame also causes weight gain by other mechanisms ---Causes unstable blood sugar levels, which increases the appetite and causes cravings for sweets/sugar. Thus it is particularly toxic for those with diabetes or epilepsy. Causes fluid retention giving the body a puffy and bloated appearance. This makes people look fatter than they are and increases cellulite."
