Skinny Chocolate Cake in a Mug

Before the start of my journey, I had tried a few "Cake in a Mug" recipe that I had found on Pinterest. They were pretty decent but once I keyed them in to MFP, I was surprised ( Not in a good way) to find that the one I was using regularly was over 600 cals!! I gave up on them right then.

Fast forward 6 months, I still have a sweet tooth for something "cakey" but there is no way I will eat a 600 calories cake unless it was made by a pastry chef on a day where I Zumba and burn over 700 cals.  So I decided to modify the old Cake in a mug to make it more Healthy Lifestyle Friendly. It doesn't taste as  amazing as a full fat, full sugar cake would be but it definitely hits the spot! Here's the recipe:

Skinny Chocolate Cake in a Mug

( 136 cals, 25 carbs, 0 fat, 5 protein, 10 sugar, 105 sodium, as per MFP Recipe setting)

  • 2 tbsp Flour ( I used whole wheat)
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg white
  • 1.5 tbsp skim milk
  • 1.5 tbsp apple sauce
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

Put all the dry ingredients in a mug

Add all the wet ingredients

Give it a good stir

Cook in the microwave for 2 minutes ( or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean)

 Voila!!

You could also use an artificial sweetner if you don't want to use real sugar and I'm also thinking a variation with chocolate protein powder could be a good idea.

Nice! I've never tried any of those cake-in-a-mug things. I'll definitely try this one though.

My daughter had gotten a kit for her birthday and me too when I entered the original recipe into MFP, was shocked at the total calories! I may give yours a try since I too like a little "cakey" treat every now and then!

Hey just wondering what the Apple Sauce could be replaced with? As it's not something we use regularly so I don't particularly want to buy some for this recipe ha..

Wow .. definitely going to try this. I love chocolate.

I think applesauce is the replacement for oils/butter

WDEvy wrote 18 months ago:
@ jessicakate09 The applesauce is a replacement for olive oil. If the extra fat and cals fit your macro go for it an use 1.5 tbsp of oil.

Awesome! I did the same thing, counted the calories of Cake in a Cup, which prompted me to find this.

My fiancé and I adore chocolate cake, but we cannot bring ourselves to eat hundreds of calories. This recipe is fantastic! I typically make a half-recipe and put a little peanut butter on top. If you find that you miss the icing, then simply mix 1 TBS cocoa power, 1/2 TBS sugar, and 1 TBS of water to make chocolate icing. Cheers!
