a stolen saint's supposed blessing
a celebrated massacre
a malicious cherub armed with bow and arrow
the accoutrements of a manufactured holiday
year after empty year i mouthed the words
time and again i went through the motions
each time loathing more the empty facade
dread filling me as the day approached
always faking the emotions i never felt
but not this year
this year my heart is full
the ache has been soothed
the emptiness has been filled
decades of artifice replaced with the genuine
i am still angry, make no mistake
but now i rage because we are apart
my forever, now found, is still so far away
the torture of true love postponed
heaven put off for now for duty and responsibility
my eternity not being next to me tears at my soul
but i take solace in our certainty
life is about finding the one worth suffering for
the one who will share this life and the next
eventually
so if i look angry, don't feel too badly, it'll pass
